Minister of Science and Innovation

Born in San Sebastian, Spain, on February 21, 1962.

Dr Garmendia holds a degree in Biological Sciences, specializing in Genetics, and a PhD in Molecular Biology. She did her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Margarita Salas at the Severo Ochoa Biological Research Centre in Madrid. She also gained a MBA from IESE Business School at the University of Navarra.

In the year 2001 Dr Garmendia developed a successful managerial model who gave origin to Genetrix, a successful biotechnological group formed by 9 companies, as well as Inbiomed, a non-for-profit research foundation dedicated to stem cell research and regenerative medicine.

She had an active role in the Biotech sector as Chairwoman of the Spanish Association of Bio enterprises (ASEBIO), Member of different Scientific Committees and Member of the Spanish Confederation of Employers' Organizations (CEOE) Board of Directors.

Her work and enterprising vision has been recognized in different occasions by prizes to her research and innovative management.

Dr Cristina Garmendia was appointed Minister of Science and Innovation on April 2008
