R-LRB - NMR Laboratory at the University of Barcelona (LRB)

The Bio-molecular Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Laboratory Network is a distributed ICTS in health sciences field. It is devoted to Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy. NMR spectroscopy is the most versatile analytical technique to study molecules at atomic resolution. This technique also provides broad information beyond the structural biology main objective, such as protonation states and molecular dynamics at atomic level. NMR spectroscopy offers unique capabilities for drugs development and production, functional proteomics and metabolomics.

This ICTS is composed of the Barcelona University NMR Laboratory (LRB), Manuel Rico NMR Laboratory (LMR) and Euskadi NMR Laboratory (LRE).

The LRB is part of Scientific and Technologic Centers of the University of Barcelona (CCiTUB). It is located in a 722 m2 space in the Barcelona Science Park Cluster building, specially designed to house high-field NMR spectrometers, that is to say, a vibration-free environment, thermally regulated to ensure high stability and low magnetic interference. The facility has been in operation since 2000.

The laboratory has a broad set of instruments with different ranges and configurations, complemented with access to the expression and purification laboratories of labelled proteins and the possibility of integrating NMR with a large number of other experimental techniques in the CCiTUB.

NMR is used to study different areas such as biomolecules structure and dynamics, functional biology (MRI in vivo), drugs identification and optimization in pharmaceutical research, including drug release, structural identification in organic and inorganic chemistry, food technology and new materials. The LRB constantly works on methodological development in order to optimize instrumentation performances and facilitate, together with users, the development and implementation of new applications.development and implementation of new applications.

Características principales

El laboratorio cuenta con un espectrómetro de RMN de 800 MHz, dos equipos de 600 MHz y tres de 500 MHz, así como con un instrumento de Polarización Nuclear Dinámica (DNP, polarizador Hypersense ) asociado a uno de los equipos de 500 MHz. Por otra parte, el espectrómetro de 800 MHz y uno de los 600 MHz están equipados con criosondas, para obtener la máxima sensibilidad. Además, otro de los equipos de 500 MHz dispone de una sonda de HRMAS, especialmente adaptada para el estudio de tejidos biológicos o muestras en fase de gel. El laboratorio está preparado para poder incorporar nuevos equipos de última generación, incluyendo campos por encima de los 23 Tesla (1 GHz) y equipos para el estudio de biosólidos.
