The Programme aims to promote excellence in scientific research in Spain. It targets centres or units that carry out cutting-edge research and are among the world's best in their respective areas.
Accreditation process is developed through a competitive call for existing centres and units on the basis of their research performance during the last 5 years.
Accreditation as a “Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence” or a “María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence” is valid for the next four years and includes a grant for this period.
The Programme is intended for both centres and units, which are expected to perform the highest quality research. The only difference between them is that, in general, centres should be autonomous in their research management and have a bigger critical mass than units.
Each accredited “Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence” will receive financial support for developing its strategic plan during the next four years. The financial support to accredited “María de Maeztu Units of Excellence” is devoted to developing their strategic research programmes in the same period.
