José López Barneo, National Research Award ‘Santiago Ramón y Cajal’ in the area of Biology

José López Barneo has been recognized for his brilliant life trajectory and pioneering contributions to breakthroughs of great impact in the field of cellular and molecular physiology and neurobiology, such as the understanding of the mechanisms of regulation of breathing by oxygen, the discovery of stem cells in the carotid body and the development of new strategies for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

López Barneo is Professor Emeritus of Physiology and Biophysics of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Seville and Senior Group Leader of the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville, IBiS (Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío/CSIC/Universidad de Sevilla).
