What to study and where

Today more than ever, universities are the repositories and producers of knowledge. Teaching, research and the ability to share and transfer that knowledge are the central functions of their activity.

In recent decades there has been a very considerable increase in the number of Spanish universities and each of these universities offers official Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in most branches of knowledge. To know what to study and where are the questions posed by any student who wishes to begin their higher university studies.

Universities are a privileged place for training and at the same time a critical space where to generate bridges of collaboration and action with many other universities in the world.

Spanish university degrees

The management of university degrees in Spain is a complex and well-structured process, which ensures the quality and recognition of the degrees awarded by universities. This system is essential to maintain educational standards and facilitate the academic and professional mobility of graduates.

In recent years, progress has been made in the digitalization of title management processes, including the issuance of titles in digital format and the implementation of online verification systems.

Foreign university degrees

There are several ways to recognize a foreign university degree in Spain to work or continue studying: Homologation, which qualifies for the exercise of a regulated profession in Spain; Equivalence, which recognizes a foreign degree with academic and administrative effects; Validation, which recognizes complete or partial higher studies with the aim of continuing such studies in a Spanish university; and Professional recognition according to Directive 2005/36/EC for regulated professions and university graduates from the EU, EEA and Switzerland.

The Portal of Recognition of Foreign University Degrees (Valida-TE) is the space to know how to recognize your foreign university degree in Spain.

University teaching bodies

University teaching bodies constitute the backbone of the higher education system. The professional development of university teaching bodies involves advancement through these ranks through the acquisition of experience, the production of relevant research, participation in academic projects and publication in specialized journals.

In addition, teachers often participate in continuing education programs, congresses, and other academic activities that contribute to their professional growth and the advancement of knowledge in their field of specialization.

European alliances of universities

Driven by the European Commission since 2017, the European Universities Initiative (education.ec.europa.eu) is promoting the creation of so-called European University Alliances. These Alliances constitute long-term projects of cooperation between institutions of higher education of the Member States that, among other objectives, aim to improve the quality of higher education in all its dimensions and contribute to the development of the European Area of Education and the competitiveness of European universities.

Since its launch, Spanish universities have been actively involved in the initiative and in the creation of alliances, being one of the Member States in which more universities coordinate or participate in the existing Alliances.
