Spanish Academic and Research Network (RedIRIS)

Red Académica y de Investigación Española (RedIRIS)

RedIRIS is an advanced communications network that serves the Spanish scientific and academic community. It was created in 1988 to offer its own backbone of communications to universities and research centers. Since 2004, the public business entity Red.es has been in charge of its technical and operational management.

Throughout its nearly 38 years of history, the RedIRIS network has continued to grow and update. Its latest update has been the deployment of RedIRIS NOVA, a dark fiber network of 12 000 km, and an expansion of the network to reach 60 points of presence, to which more than 500 academic and scientific institutions connect, either directly or through regional academic networks.

RedIRIS is not an isolated network, but operates in synchrony with other networks, both regional and international, such as GÉANT, which brings together in Europe the main national academic and research networks.
