Characterization of design service companies

Design service companies and self-employed professionals comprise an economic sector classified under National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE) code 74.10, Specific Design Activities, following a revision carried out by the European Commission in 2009. In Spain, there are 6,949 active companies registered under CNAE 74,10 as their main activity (National Statistics Institute [INE] data 2019).

In 2019, in response to the demands of the design community and in close collaboration with it, the former Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities launched a study based on voluntary responses to a specific questionnaire. The questionnaire, which received a significant response, collected data on size, professional profiles, disciplines, turnover and internationalisation.
