Issuance of university degrees

The management of university degrees in Spain is a process that ensures the quality and recognition of the degrees awarded by universities. This system is essential to maintain educational standards and facilitate the academic and professional mobility of graduates.

In recent years, progress has been made in the digitalization of degree management processes, including the possibility of electronic consultation of correctly registered university degrees and the implementation of online verification systems.

Who is responsible for the issuance of official university degrees?

The issuance of official university degrees is the responsibility of the universities themselves, with the exception of those university degrees whose end date is prior to January 1988 and university degrees of Doctor whose doctoral thesis has been approved prior to August 1989. In these cases, the issuing authority is vested in the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.

Where to request the issuance of a university degree or a duplicate of it?

The application for the issuance or duplication of an official university degree must be made at the university center or the faculty where the studies were completed.

If the issuance or reissuance of the degree is within the competence of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the university centre will send the application to the corresponding unit of the Ministry.

You can consult the authorized centers in the Register of Universities, Centers and Degrees (RUCT).

Can the data of a title be modified?

Official university degrees are public documents valid throughout the national territory. Therefore, any modification in the title data will entail the cancellation of the original title and the issuance of a duplicate.

In which cases can a duplicate of the title be requested?

A duplicate of a title will be issued in cases of loss, theft, total or partial destruction or rectification of the original, at the request of the person concerned and subject to payment of the corresponding fees.

What should be taken into account if the issuance of a duplicate is the responsibility of this Ministry?

In the event of loss of title, the publication in the Official State Gazette of an announcement recording the alleged loss will be a prerequisite for obtaining a duplicate in order to facilitate, where appropriate, the appropriate claims.

If these have not occurred within thirty days from the date of publication of the announcement, the procedure for the issuance of the corresponding duplicate will begin.

The initiative for the publication of the announcement is the responsibility of the Degree Unit of the corresponding university.

Both the cost of publishing the loss notice in this official journal and the amount of the fee for issuing the duplicate will be borne by the interested party.

Duplicates will not be issued for text change, material error or deterioration of a title without having previously received the original title or the part of it that allows its identification.
