Frequently asked questions

The start of the application for recognition of a foreign university degree in Spain may give rise to various doubts. In order to facilitate the understanding of this process, we have compiled a series of frequently asked questions that offer general guidance on the most relevant aspects of the process.

Also available for download in the “Documents” section is an expanded guide, which contains detailed information and answers to more specific questions related to recognition procedures.

Any person in possession of a university degree with official validity obtained within the framework of foreign higher education systems may apply for the process of homologation and/or equivalence.

  • If I have a degree or diploma of my own or of permanent training.
  • If my degree is of a level other than the Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree.
  • If I have completed my studies in Spain in an unauthorized foreign center or if such studies were not authorized in the foreign center at the time of issuance of the degree. Check the university you should apply to in the Register of Universities, Centres and Degrees (universidades.sede.gob.es).
  • If a final decision regarding an identical application has already been handed down on my title. An identical application is one formulated in relation to the same foreign degree and for the same official Spanish degree or for the same academic level in the case of equivalence.
  • If I am processing a validation of studies for that same degree in a Spanish university.
  • If I have obtained my degree by recognition of professional or work experience or of unofficial university studies (own or lifelong learning) in a percentage greater than 15% of the total credits that constitute the curriculum.

When any of these circumstances occurs, the application for homologation or equivalence will be inadmissible, without refund of the fee.
