Legalization is a procedure that validates the signatures of the authorities that sign a document to present it in another country. Therefore, the academic documents that you provide in the application for homologation or equivalence must be duly legalized in the country of origin.
This requirement is not required for documents from the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland. Instead, documents from the United Kingdom need to be legalised, regardless of their date of issue.
In the applications for homologation and equivalence, the original academic documents that are not written in Spanish must be accompanied by an official translation.
Applications for approval and declaration of equivalence require the payment of a fee of 166.50 euros. To do this, different forms of payment are provided:
A general measure establishes criteria to facilitate the processing of applications for approval and equivalence.
In the procedures for the approval and declaration of equivalence of foreign university degrees it is possible to request the expedition in the processing of the files to people with refugee status, asylum seeker or with the right to temporary protection (according to the Temporary Protection Directive, Council Directive 2001/55/EC).
In addition, Spain has been participating since 1 January 2025 in the European Council of Europe’s European Passport for Refugee Qualifications (EQPR) initiative.
The agreements are agreements with other countries to facilitate the mutual recognition of degrees and university studies and complement the systems of homologation and declaration of equivalence. Spain has signed agreements with Germany, Italy, France, China, Argentina, Chile and Colombia.
Please note that the existence of these bilateral agreements does not imply that the recognition is carried out automatically or that the application for approval or equivalence can be dispensed with.
