This programme, called "Materials with advanced functionalities for the new technological transformation", aims to consolidate R&D&I activity in the area of Advanced Materials, supporting scientific leadership in strategic lines and strengthening collaboration between the participating Autonomous Communities through a master research programme, generating and attracting talent, reinforcing existing scientific infrastructures, and fostering synergies between research centres, technology centres and companies to drive innovation and technological development and contribute to job creation. In particular, the parties express their willingness to identify, where applicable, as areas of future collaboration for the development of the programme the following lines of action (LA):
- LA-1: Promoting multidisciplinary research on graphene and other two-dimensional materials ranging from new physics emerging at the two-dimensional limit to the controlled and scalable chemical design and production of new materials and two-dimensional heterostructures for potential applications.
- LA-2: Developing and integrating key innovative materials and processes in the energy transition towards a green and resilient economy, driving innovative technologies for the industrial sector where a high level of development has been attained, or is expected to be attained, and unlocking new processes for CO2 capture and valorisation.
- LA-3: Designing materials with advanced functionalities (in particular, materials that respond to external stimuli) that provide the basis for developing applications to cover social needs in the fields of Information and Communication Technologies, Health, Mobility, and Habitat and Environment.
- LA-4: Fostering collaboration and synergies between the different stakeholders involved in R&D&I in Advanced Materials through joint actions that raise the profile of this scientific-technological community, train new generations of scientists, boost research and innovation in this strategic area, and disseminate and transfer knowledge to the productive sector.
The programme was initially launched with the Autonomous Communities of the Basque Country, Catalonia, Valencia, Aragon, Madrid and Castilla y León, with the participation of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), by signing a framework agreement with the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
Subsequently, the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha joined following the Agreement of the Council for Scientific, Technological and Innovation Policy of 22 June 2022.
