The National Agency for Quality Evaluation and Accreditation (ANECA) aims to promote and ensure quality in higher education, and particularly in Spanish universities, both in the national and international context through the evaluation, certification and accreditation of teaching, teaching staff and university institutions and centres.
Within its sphere of competence, it is up to ANECA to evaluate:
- The teaching leading to obtaining university degrees of an official nature and valid throughout the national territory.
- The merits of those who aspire to the teaching bodies and hired professors of the universities.
- The teaching, research, knowledge transfer and management activities of the teaching and research staff of the Universities and of the research staff official career of the Public Research Agencies.
- University and research institutions and centers.
- Foreign university degrees through homologation or equivalence procedures.
- The correspondence to the levels of the Spanish Framework of Qualifications for Higher Education (MECES) of national university degrees prior to RD 1393/2007.
Apart from the procedures for the evaluation of teaching and teaching staff derived from the current regulations, ANECA acts as an evaluation body for periodic competitive calls by the General Secretariat of Universities, as well as for those processes in which a merit evaluation carried out by academic peers is required.
