The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), established in 1958, is a non-governmental organization made up of scientists whose objectives are to promote, develop and coordinate international scientific research in the Antarctic region, as well as its role in the terrestrial system. The SCAR provides objective and independent scientific advice to the Antarctic Treaty consultative meetings.
Spain has been a full member of SCAR since 1990, when the National Committee of SCAR was formed.
The SCAR has 3 scientific groups: Earth Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences; and a number of permanent committees.
