Projects of the Antarctic campaign 2023-2024

During the 37th Antarctic research campaign, 30 scientific projects will be developed, 18 of them funded by the State Research Agency, 4 time series and the volcanic surveillance service provided by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and weather forecasting from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

The projects will be developed in the Spanish Antarctic bases Juan Carlos I and the international camp of Peninsula Byers, the base Gabriel de Castilla and the oceanographic research vessel Hespérides, two of the scientific projects will complete their research in facilities in Chile and Turkey. On the other hand, scientific projects from Portugal, Chile, the Netherlands and Germany will develop their activities in the Spanish Antarctic bases, a clear example of scientific cooperation in Antarctica.

About 240 people from the scientific community and technical staff participate in this Antarctic campaign. All the projects and research work carried out during the campaign, as well as other activities, will be supported by the specialized technical staff of the Marine Technology Unit of the CSIC, and the endowments of the BAE Gabriel de Castilla (Spanish Army) and the BIO Hespérides (Spanish Navy).

The subject of scientific projects is grouped into 3 major disciplines, Life Sciences (39%), Earth Sciences (30%) and Physical Sciences (33%), although they are mostly multidisciplinary and multidisciplinary projects and some at the frontier of knowledge.

In addition, 2 social media outlets will participate in this campaign that will try to narrate the activities of the scientific projects and life in the bases and the ship.
