The 34th Spanish Antarctic Campaign will host 13 research projects—nine funded by the State Research Agency (AEI) and four historical series. In addition, as always, the State Meteorological Agency will provide support for forecasting and observation and meteorological and climatological information during the Antarctic campaign.
The Spanish Polar Committee has coordinated preparations for the campaign and, in particular, the adaptation of protocols and actions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective is to conduct the scientific programme in Antarctica in a safe manner to ensure that no participant is exposed to the disease and that the Antarctic Continent remains free of the virus. This year, more than ever, institutional coordination has been essential for the safe implementation of the campaign.
In this campaign, Spain has been forced to limit the participation of foreign projects in its facilities due to restrictions imposed by pandemic conditions.
