This facility is located in the Science and Technology Park of Cantabria (PCTCAN, Santander) and is managed by the Environmental Hydraulics Institute Foundation.
The Large Tank for Maritime Engineering of Cantabria (GTIM) comprises a series of experimental tanks and flumes combined with a computer simulation system that reproduces the wind, wave and current conditions of any part of the world. Its main features are a large deep water tank (40 x 33 x 4.5 metres) and a tsunami flume (CocoTsu). Its main activities include studying problems related to coastal dynamics and natural coastal systems, protection infrastructures, ports, offshore platforms, marine renewable energy and any specific technologies applicable to the marine environment.
Due to its size and unique features, the GTIM has been classified by the Spanish Government as a Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS). Furthermore, it is one of the four largest tanks with the most advanced capabilities in Europe and is ranked among the top fifteen in the world.
