Hallmark of equality in R+D+I

The Gender Equality label in R&D&I is a seal of quality that will be awarded to centres and entities in the science, technology and innovation sector that show and demonstrate progress in gender equality and promote the exchange of good practices in this field. This badge was included in the reform of the Law of Science approved in 2022.

Gender equality in the Spanish System of Science, Technology and Innovation is a fundamental pillar to achieve both effective equality between women and men and the maximum use of talent within the policy of scientific and technical research, development and innovation.

This badge represents a further step forward towards effective equality between women and men and is considered as an element that allows us to recognize the role that entities whose main activity is the execution of research, technological development and/or innovation, have been developing for a long time. It aims to make visible the successful actions in the field of equality in the area of R+D+I that these entities carry out favors the exchange of good practices, thus encouraging the candidacy to other research or innovation centers.

The label is also a seal that recognizes the quality of the research, innovation and transfer carried out by the entities. The inclusion of the gender perspective in R&D&I is not only a guarantee for the equal participation of women, but its benefits extend and make it possible to improve the lives of all the people who work in these institutions and of those who obtain in their lives the real benefits of these advances, that is, of the whole society. To this end, it has been designed taking into account other distinctives defined at the national level, such as the CSIC’s Equality label, and international references of recognized prestige such as the Athena SWAN label or the EIGE tool for Good Practices, based on the new Law of Science, Technology and Innovation.

El distintivo de Igualdad de Género en I+D+I está regulado por el Real Decreto 669/2023, de 18 de julio.

Entities that wish to apply for this seal of excellence may do so when the calls are published, which will happen on a biannual basis. The applications will be evaluated by an Evaluation Commission led by the Women and Science Unit (UMyC) and constituted with experts in the field of equality in R+D+I. Those entities that pass the evaluation will be recognized with the equality badge that will have a duration of 4 years, a badge that can be exhibited following the guidelines established in this Royal Decree.
