Valentine Fuster. National Research Award “Gregorio Marañón”, in the area of Medicine.
Recognized for his work internationally, the contributions to cardiovascular medicine made by Dr. Fuster have had an enormous impact on improving the treatment of patients with heart ailments. He was awarded the Prince of Asturias Award for Research in 1996 for the contribution of his work to improving the prevention and treatment of heart attacks, highlighting his teachings on the role of thrombosis and inflammation in acute coronary syndromes. He has been named Doctor Honoris Causa in thirty-seven prestigious universities and is the only cardiologist to have received the highest research awards from the four major international cardiology organizations: the American Heart Association, the American College of Cardiology, the European Society of Cardiology and the Inter-American Society of Cardiology. He currently combines his functions as general director of the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC), attached to the Carlos III Health Institute, with his position as director of the Cardiovascular Institute and “Doctor-in-Chief”, of the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.
“You have to be very sure of yourself to be a researcher,” says Dr. Fuster, aware of the “many obstacles” he has faced in the study of cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Valentín Fuster himself summarizes his professional career in three phases: a first consisting of research into the development of myocardial infarctions; a second on the prevention of this disease; and finally, a stage of research with cutting-edge technology in people from birth to 50 years of age.
