International Science Council (ISC),The International Science Council (ISC) is a non-governmental organisation that unites a large number of international scientific unions and organisations from 140 countries.
The ISC was created in 2018 following a merger of the International Council for Science (formerly ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). The ISC brings together the various unions, committees and programmes that formerly comprised these organisations. It expands the role initiated by ICSU and ISSC as a leading international body and instrument in the field of science, providing support to address global issues from a scientific perspective and serving as a spokesperson for the international scientific community.
From a strategic perspective, the ISC will engage in the areas of Science for Policy and Science Policy where global action is required, defending the freedom of science and its responsible practice.
The ISC is headquartered in Paris and is structured around an Executive Committee and three Regional Offices (Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean). It holds an Annual General Meeting every three years.
SPAIN IN THE ISC.
According to the ISC governance structure, Spain has been a "National Member" since 1922. Spain is currently represented by the General Secretariat for Research through the General Sub-Directorate for the Internationalisation of Science and Innovation of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIN). Spain's participation is managed through the support of the Spanish ISC Commission (CEISC), established on 8 March 2019.
The CEISC brings together the committees that represent Spain in different ISC unions, committees and programmes. It is comprised of one representative from each of the national committees that represent Spain in the ISC unions, committees, and programmes, in addition to representatives of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
The CEISC is responsible for coordinating the actions of Spanish scientific unions, programmes and associations with those of the ISC and its various bodies and protecting the interests of the various national and international committees of the ISC.
In addition, the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities has created a CEISC Support Group formed by five leading scientists proposed by the committees of the CEISC, which responds to the Ministry's requests and acts as a liaison between the committees and the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities.
