International Council of Science (ISC)

The International Science Council (ISC) is a non-governmental organization that brings together a large number of international scientific unions and organizations in which 140 countries participate.

The ISC was created in 2018 as a result of the merger of the International Council for Science (formerly ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). The ISC brings together the different unions, committees and programs that made up these organizations. It extends the role initiated by ICSU and ISSC, as an international reference body and instrument in the field of science, as a support to address global problems from the point of view of science and to act as a spokesperson for the international scientific community.

From a strategic perspective, the ISC will act both in Science for Policy and in Scientific Policy in those issues that require global action, defending the freedom of science and its responsible practice.

The ISC is based in Paris, and is structured with an Executive Committee and three Regional Offices (Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean); and holds a General Assembly every three years.

SPAIN IN THE ISC.

According to the governance structure of the ISC, Spain has been a “National Member” since 1922. Currently, Spain is represented by the General Secretariat for Research through the General Subdirectorate of Internationalization of Science and Innovation, of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIN). The management of our participation is done with the support of the Spanish Commission ISC (CEISC), constituted on March 8, 2019

The CEISC brings together the committees that represent Spain in the different unions, committees and programs of the ISC. It consists of a representative of each of the national committees that hold the Spanish representation in the unions, committees and programs of the ISC, in addition to the representatives of the MCIN.

Among the functions of the CEISC are the coordination of the actions of Spanish scientific unions, programs and associations with those developed by the ISC and its various bodies; as well as, ensuring the interests of the different national and international committees of the ISC.

In addition, the MCIN has created a Support Group for the CEISC formed by 5 scientists of recognized prestige on the proposal of the committees that make up the CEISC itself and that responds to those matters that are requested from the ministry and serves as a link between the set of committees and the MCIN.
