General Secretariat for Research

The General Secretariat for Research provides leadership in the fields of science, innovation and universities, as well as promoting the achievement of objectives and the implementation of the projects of its organization.

The functions of this General Secretariat are also:

  • Direction of the competences attributed to the department in science, innovation and universities.
  • The management of national research awards.
  • The management of operational programmes co-financed by European Union funds.
  • The strategic direction of the State Agency Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the Autonomous Agency Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), and the Autonomous Agency Center for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT).
  • The promotion of Spanish participation in the R&D&I promotion programmes promoted by the European Union.
  • Strategic planning, coordination, monitoring and representation of large national scientific and technical facilities with Autonomous and State Communities.
  • The international representation of large Spanish scientific and technical installations.
  • Support for the coordination, promotion and monitoring of polar research, development and innovation.
  • The coordination of public bodies and entities linked to or dependent on the General Secretariat for Research.

This General Secretariat is composed of the following governing bodies:

  • The General Subdirectorate of International Scientific Consortia, Agencies and Infrastructures.
  • The General Subdirectorate of Large Scientific-Technical Facilities.
  • The General Subdirectorate of Public Research Bodies and Entities.
