The General Secretariat for Research exercises management functions in the fields of science, innovation and universities, as well as the promotion of the objectives and the performance of its organisation's projects.
The functions of this General Secretariat are also:
- Management of the powers attributed to the department in the fields of science, innovation and universities.
- The management of national research awards.
- The management of operational programmes co-financed by European Union funds.
- The strategic direction of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Carlos III Autonomous Health Institute (ISCIII), and the Autonomous Centre for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT).
- The promotion of Spanish participation in R&D promotion programmes pursued by the European Union.
- The strategic planning, coordination, monitoring and representation of large national scientific-technical facilities with autonomous and state communities.
- The international representation of large Spanish scientific-technical facilities.
- Support for the coordination, promotion and monitoring of polar research, development and innovation.
- The coordination of public bodies and institutions linked to or dependent on the General Secretariat for Research.
This General Secretariat consists of the following governing bodies:
- The General Subdirectorate of International Scientific Consortiums, Organisations and Infrastructures.
- The General Subdirectorate for Large Scientific-Technical Facilities.
- The General Subdirectorate of Public Research Organisations and Institutions.
