The 36th Antarctic research campaign will involve 26 scientific projects divided between the Juan Carlos I and Gabriel de Castilla Spanish Antarctic bases and the oceanographic research vessel BIO Hespérides.
Around 230 people are set to participate in this Antarctic campaign, including the scientific community and technical staff supporting the scientific projects and managing the bases and the research vessel. The scientific projects are grouped into three main areas: Life Sciences (42%), Earth Sciences (32%) and Physical Sciences (26%). Most of the projects are multidisciplinary, while some are at the cutting edge of knowledge.
Specifically, there are 13 projects of the National Research and International Cooperation Plan of the State Research Agency, four time series projects and one project under the Ministry of Defence, in addition to volcanic monitoring services provided by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and weather forecasting services provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). In addition, the research campaign will support eight research projects from other Antarctic programmes (Portugal, Chile, Canada, Germany and Colombia). Finally, two media outlets have been selected to participate in the campaign.
