Basic and clinical researchers work together at the CIBER with the aim of making it easier for laboratory research to reach patients quickly and safely, preventing duplications, delivering results quickly and transferring research findings to industry and society. The Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), as the main sponsor and funding body, is responsible for monitoring and overseeing all activities conducted at the CIBER.
It conducts activities in eleven research areas in almost all the Spanish Autonomous Communities:

- Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES),
- Liver and Digestive Diseases (CIBEREHD),
- Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP),
- Mental Health (CIBERSAM),
- Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases (CIBERDEM),
- Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBEROBN),
- Frailty and Ageing (CIBERFES),
- Cardiovascular diseases (CIBERCV), and
- Cancer (CIBERONC).
