The General State Administration, through the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MCIN) and the Centre for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT), and the Regional Government of Extremadura, through the Regional Ministry of Economy, Science and Digital Agenda and Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology and the Science and Technology Park Foundation of Extremadura (FUNDECYT-PCTEx), have launched actions aimed at creating, equipping and commissioning an Iberian R&D centre for energy storage.
FUNDECYT-PCTEx will manage these actions until the corresponding international instruments are executed between the Kingdom of Spain and the Republic of Portugal, enabling the creation and approval of the articles of association of the Iberian Energy Storage Research Centre (CIIAE), which will ultimately be responsible for managing and operating all CIIAE-related elements.
Both parties will collaborate, by means of a joint and equal contribution, to promote the creation and provision of the essential elements for the implementation of the CIIAE's infrastructure.
The main objective of the centre is to contribute to solving the scientific and technological challenges related to the management of green energies through scientific research, technological development and innovation in energy storage to meet industrial demands and society's needs for a sustainable energy future.
Accordingly, the Iberian centre will focus its activity on the following three main areas to achieve its objectives:
- Research and development of energy storage technologies and their integration with green energies.
- Close collaboration with the industrial sector and joint development of technologies.
- Advice and training on green energies and their management.
