What is the declaration of equivalence?
The declaration of equivalence of foreign university degrees, regulated in Royal Decree 889/2022 (boe.es), of October 18, is a recognition of the degree at the level of Degree or Master with exclusively academic and administrative effects throughout the national territory.
What's the point?
It serves to:
- To continue studies, if the university requires it
- To participate in selective processes as a public employee
- So that the employer knows what the degree corresponds to
It does not serve for the exercise of a profession regulated by Royal Decree 889/2022. In that case, the approval must be requested.
What are the minimum requirements?
Grade: Official university degree in the country of origin, of a minimum of three years of full-time study (180 ECTS or equivalent). You must give access to university master’s degrees.
Master: Official university degree in the country of origin, of a minimum of one year of full-time study (60 ECTS or equivalent). You must give access to doctoral studies.
When to request it?
The declaration of equivalence can be requested provided that:
- The university degree corresponds to a Bachelor's or Master's level. Consult in Spanish Qualifications Framework (educacionfpydeportes.gob.es).
- The university degree does not lead to a regulated profession. Consultar el Anexo del Real Decreto 889/2022 (boe.es), de 18 de octubre.
- The university degree leads to a regulated profession, but the applicant does not aim for professional performance.
Where to apply for equivalence if the degree is at the doctoral level?
The declaration of equivalence to the academic level of Doctor or Doctor is made by Spanish universities. Please refer to the university to which you should apply in the Register of Universities, Centres and Degrees (universidades.sede.gob.es).
