This distinction recognises cities that favour economic sustainability and a growth pattern based on knowledge and innovation.
The distinction was created in 2010 by Order CIN/2502/2010, of 17 September.
The cities distinguished with this award are part of the association Red INNTECLA of “Cities of Science and Innovation” (ARINN).
Currently, the INNPULSATION Network has 90 cities of all sizes that, according to the number of inhabitants, belong to the following three categories:
- up to 20 000 inhabitants,
- from 20 001 to 100 000 inhabitants,
- More than 100 000 inhabitants.
The objectives of the "City of Science and Innovation" distinction and the INNPULSE Network are:
- Recognize and promote the actions carried out in the field of Science and Innovation by the Local Administrations.
- Promote collaboration between municipalities, work in Red and serve as a model for other municipalities.
- Contribuir al cambio del modelo productivo basado en el conocimiento y la I+D+I.
The Distinction “City of Science and Innovation” is obtained by presenting a candidacy for the call made periodically by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. It is valid for four years.
